Summary
The report describes how NIST intends to guide the move from quantum-vulnerable cryptographic algorithms to post-quantum standards for digital signatures and key establishment (FIPS 203, 204 and 205). It lists the existing standards affected, the algorithms that will replace them and the timeline: current public-key algorithms will be deprecated after 2030 and disallowed after 2035. It makes clear that this window serves lower-risk systems and does not change the earlier deadlines set for the most sensitive federal systems by Executive Order 14412 and OMB memorandum M-26-15. It is aimed at vendors, standards bodies and agencies to speed up the adoption of post-quantum cryptography.
Key dates
- Quantum-vulnerable public-key algorithms (RSA, ECDSA, EdDSA, DH, ECDH and MQV) become deprecated under NIST standards
- The same algorithms are disallowed under NIST standards and guidelines
