The NIST guide brings security into systems engineering, so that it is designed in from the start rather than added at the end. It takes up the system life cycle processes of ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288 (agreement, project management and technical) and for each one sets out the security activities to be carried out, from requirements definition to disposal. It collects the principles of secure design, such as least privilege, defence in depth and simplicity, and explains how to demonstrate with evidence and arguments that a system is trustworthy enough for its intended use. It applies to any system: IT, industrial, medical, military or vehicle systems.
