Summary
The NIST guide is one of the most widely used references in the world for the security of OT systems: industrial control systems, SCADA, distributed control systems, PLCs, building automation and physical access control systems. It describes typical architectures and how they differ from IT, threats and vulnerabilities, and explains how to build an OT security programme and apply the Risk Management Framework. It offers a reference architecture with defence in depth and segmentation, and an OT overlay of the SP 800-53 controls. The third revision broadens the scope from ICS alone to all operational technology.
