Summary

The PIPL is China's general personal data protection law, with 74 articles in 8 chapters. It sets the legal bases for processing, stricter rules for sensitive data and for cross-border transfers, which require a security assessment, certification or a standard contract. Handlers must take security measures, carry out impact assessments and report breaches; critical infrastructure operators must store data in China.
