After a national security review under the Investment Canada Act, the Canadian government ordered Hikvision Canada Inc., the Canadian subsidiary of the Chinese video surveillance maker Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology, to cease all operations in Canada and wind up its Canadian business. The order requires it to cancel sales orders and end marketing and after-sales support at once, to close its places of operation in Canada and end the employment of its staff and its contracts with self-employed individuals within 120 days, and not to sell or transfer the products it offered in Canada to entities operating in Canada. The review found that the company's continued operation would expand and sustain the market penetration of Hikvision products, increasing the risk of espionage and other intelligence activities by the People's Republic of China, whose laws can compel companies to assist the state's security services.
